NYGH’s Colorectal Cancer Program Goes Global

Congratulations to NYGH’s Amy Jia Su and Dr. Stan Feinberg who recently travelled to China on behalf of NYGH to share best practices and medical education in colorectal cancer care to local health care professionals.

The trip was organized last May through the Bethune Medical Development Association of Canada (BMDAC), a non-profit organization that aims to promote and facilitate international cooperation in medical research, education, patient care, humanitarian activities and cultural exchanges between Canada and China.

“This experience was an excellent opportunity to share our expertise in comprehensive GI cancer care internationally and is further validation that NYGH is a leader in this space,” says Dr. Feinberg, a colon and rectal surgeon at NYGH.

NYGH is a provincial leader in cancer surgery wait times from referral to first appointment with a clinician (wait 1) and offers leading-edge techniques and expertise in minimally invasive surgery for colorectal cancer.

The pair visited hospitals in four cities at the invitation of BMDAC to lecture on various topics including nursing and surgical training in rectal cancer, Enhance Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) processes, and managing Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), an emerging field of practice in China.

“We were also able to demonstrate the important role nurses can play in areas the Chinese medical system is looking to strengthen like complex wound management and ostomy care,” adds Amy Jia Su, Patient Navigator and Clinical Nurse Specialist in the GI Cancer Care Program.

The presentations were well received and BMDAC has extended another invitation to return in the future.

Congratulations to both Amy and Dr. Feinberg on their successful trip and to all team members of the Colorectal Cancer Program!
